Artist Statement

While most of my work is traditional painting, I've made a few mixed media pieces over the years and worked on them slowly as I accumulate new materials and ideas. I find items on the street, friends mail me shiny things, and if I can't find the perfect addition I make it myself. "Note to Self" contains countless layers of poetry, maps, musings, successes and failures. I've allowed friends and strangers to add their own hidden messages and doodles, letting my own marks to be obscured and edited through the chaos of the wider world. My favorite current elements are a reproduction of my prosthetic eye and a glowing green medallion. "Strawberry Seabreeze" is a take on sensationalized tabloid media, wherein celebrity gossip is replaced by elements of marijuana subculture. This "more is more" sensibility lends itself to nauseating color and glossy text effects, celebrating the substance itself, and the fanatical proponents of legalization. After owning this piece for years, I finally found time to add an LED backlight, the last step in its' long and glorious illumination.
