Artist Statement

When I paint, I love the active participation of the medium in the creation of the painting. I want the medium to push back and make me adapt my ideas to its requirements. After years of studying the use of oil pastels, collage, and watercolor, I discovered painting with encaustics, which is painting with clear and pigmented hot beeswax mediums, an ancient painting form dating back to the Egyptians. With encaustics, I am able to use all my other mediums as well as my photography in my paintings. Working with encaustics gives me ample opportunities to experiment with "what if…": what if I use this tool to make marks, what if I embed this in the wax, what if I combine these images, what if, what if, what if…. The opportunities and joy are endless.
