Artist Statement

For several years, I concentrated on paintings inspired by vintage photographs. The first were based on photographs of my husband's family dating from around 1910, photographs that I have loved ever since encountering them several decades ago. I was strangely moved by these images of people, now gone, who were so youthful and full of life at the time the photos were taken. Lives, frozen for a moment and preserved now only by virtue of the photograph. Perhaps my painting them could bring them a bit more to life?

From that original series I moved on to explore the magic of vintage photographs gathered from various sources – old photo albums of friends, museum collections, photos discovered online, etc. Those I was drawn to seemed in some fashion to capture an era, a time gone by. The paintings currently on display on this wall reflect this interest, as it evolved.
