Wildfires

Wildfires is a manifestation of the global unease and numerous crises facing us this year. The work was developed somewhat differently from my normal methods of creation which typically rely on the use of spontaneous lines, patterns and symbols inspired totally by the work itself.

For most of the year, my thoughts have been consumed with the COVID-19 pandemic and I felt the need to address this issue in a painting. To begin, I found a painting that I had only barely started which appeared to have a distinct graph showing our inability to flatten the curve. I focused on the graph first and found that around it I saw a shrouded figure that seemed to be encompassing it. Next I decided to present a representation of the virus itself. As the painting's development continued, the wildfires in California began to burn and I found shapes in the work that reflected the imagery of flames. This conflagration of California is only a symptom of the climate crisis that is evolving around us. In all 2020, has been a year of seemingly inextinguishable wildfires.
