Music is an accompaniment to me in my studio during every working session. Earlier this year I was reintroduced to the genre of jazz; a music form I had not listened to since my childhood when my older brother listened to jazz while I listened to Motown, the Beatles and Led Zeppelin. Upon listening attentively to ’40s and ’50s era jazz pieces for several weeks I felt a strong visual and aural relationship between abstraction and jazz. Curiosity to explore this relationship in a series of artworks was an immediate one, and as I found out, to many other artists through time.

In all of its forms, music shares with art many of the same terms to describe its characteristics. Composition, form, color, tone, texture, mood, rhythm, and more, are all shared terms. The relationships are nothing short of striking. I’ve attempted to capture some of these shared characteristics in the artworks you see before you.

Each piece in the series represents my visual interpretation of emotions, playing styles and distinctive sounds produced by jazz musicians and vocalists. The entire composition represents the collaboration of these expressions into four measures of a finished piece of music.
