Ireland is a land of old stones: prehistoric standing stones, dolmens and circles, stone fences and buildings, and interesting loose stones amidst its green grass and moss. Last September I was fortunate to travel to the Burren area of western Ireland to participate in a 10 day encaustic workshop and tour group, “The Art and Soul Journey to Ireland 2019.”

While there, I revived my lifelong interest in and study of prehistoric stone monuments and brought home to Richmond a renewed interest in painting the aged, worn textures, colors and feelings evoked by these old stones. Encaustic, a hot pigmented wax medium I have explored for over 35 years, was the perfect medium for this new work. Its layered surfaces and translucent colors reflect the faults, cranies and variegated surface colors of old stones. The process brought to mind the joy of being in Ireland.
