I’ve been fascinated by trains as a subject for a number of years now: the geometrics, the surfaces (peeling layers, numbers, letters, graffiti). Plus there is simply a magic about trains that I can’t quite explain. Is it that they move from place to place, that they take us from place to place? Is it that they are part and parcel of a fascinating era in American history? I don’t know. I do know that barns and walls have the same geometrics and the same peeling, layered surfaces, but they don’t hold quite the same fascination. Anyway, when I learned that Bolivia had a train graveyard on its high salt flats where old steam engines have sat and rusted away for well over half a century, I decided I had to go there. And I did. These paintings are part of the resulting series of paintings.
