Atmospheric and color-subdued surfaces become a metaphor for a quiet imposed onto the busy-ness of life, creating an abstract narrative of metaphysical and alchemical happenings. The paintings — at once vibrant and calm — form a paradox of contradictory qualities. An intuitive process guides the work, yet composition and structure remain key and in the fore. Play among surface sheens is integral, as highly mixed mediums glisten and dull to become an additional layer of visual dialogue.
This work is true to its roots in abstract expressionism, but as it moves through that intuitive foundation, focus returns to lyricism, composition, line, medium, and brushwork in an effort to add to the visual vernacular of the movement, taking it to a place that exists past nostalgia or emotionality.
Abstract expressionism has been spoken for more than 75 years, yet consciousness is always unfolding. This mystery demands to be communicated within the visual language of the moments in which we live.
