Textured Red Vessel 1
Low fired red clay
9 inch diameter
$210
This new series is an exploration of surface textures. Each piece is built by hand in a time consuming process using either low-fire red or white clay. A variety of needle-type tools are worked around each vessel's surface to create the various textures. Colors are achieved using combinations of terra sigilitas, underglazes and glazes. Pieces are fired twice in an electric kiln to achieve their final look.
Artist's Statement:
My work is greatly influenced by contemporary artists as wel as early pottery from the Americas, Japan and Korea. I owe so much to the work of other known and unknown artists, past and present and I am deeply grateful to all those influences that have provided so much inspiration. I hand build all work and use a combination of slabs and coils to construct my pieces. I use a combination of slips, glazes and acrylics for surface finishes. I bisque fire to cone 05, then final fire using an outdoor barrel kiln filled with newspaper and sawdust to yield the smoky, finish.
