Artist Statement
In my paintings, I use both representational and abstract images, combined with strong contrast and patterns. The inspiration for this body of work began with what I think of as "grey thinking." As I was going through a divorce, creating art that reflected my journey helped me to process my emotions and gave me peace. I strive to create a visual representation of the way you might view the world, when seen through the filter of your emotions. Black symbolizes negative emotions. I use colorful patterns, the color white, and images of plant life to embody hope and happiness. Much of our lives is spent in between the dark and the light...in the gray. My work shows the journey we take as we navigate our lives on a day to day basis. In addition to the metaphorical aspect of my work, I also use formal aesthetic concerns to drive my decisions in regard to color, shape, and composition.
