Parker S. Galore VIII, Jean-Baptiste Stowell and Steven Warrick present the group exhibition "Undulating Geometry" in our Helena Davis Gallery. The three artists showcase "different interactions with repeated shapes and patterns" with strikingly unique visual styles. Receiving his BFA in Painting & Printmaking in 2002 from VCU, Galore is a founder of RVAMAG and an event organizer with groups such as Vaudeville Galore and the Party Liberation Front. Jean-Baptiste Stowell’s work is "influenced by comic book art, millennium graffiti and the cubist/futurist movements." Exhibiting his artwork nationally, his ability to create also extends to his career as an accomplished musician. Steven Warrick, a graduate of VCU’s Illustration Department, designs and illustrates for burlesque performers in addition to his inventive body of two-dimensional work.

Parker S. Galore VIII

My work transformed in 2014; from a faster application of expressive lines and color builds into a more simple, concentrated, slower application of lines, shape, and color. The images built attempt symmetry and a certain precision, while allowing on- the-spot line connections, constant discovery and decisions. The outcome has a more graphic quality which reference symbolism of the mystical, metaphorical world in which we constantly have access to if we so desire.

Jean-baptiste Stowell

Born in Albemarle County, Virginia, in 1984, Jean-Baptiste Stowell grew up in Athens (Greece) and New York City.  From an early age, he showed an interest in cartooning and was sent for private lessons in art theory, drawing and painting with a Russian émigré professional artist and later with Jacqueline Lore, a young graphic artist and book illustrator. In New York, he attended an alternative high school where he was able to concentrate on developing his art.  He also taught himself guitar and became an accomplished musician and songwriter, fronting a band or playing solo as Aeon Yahweh in various clubs and performance venues in and around New York (CBGB’s Downstairs, Pussycat Lounge) and Richmond.

Jean-Baptiste’s style has been significantly influenced by comic book art, millennium graffiti and the cubist/futurist movements. His paintings, usually oils on various surfaces (canvas, cardboard, discarded wooden doors, paper), display a strong visceral sense and fierce passion for color. His classical early training emerges in an appreciation for the beauty of the human form, yet he exhibits a dexterity in creating modernist cosmopolitan effects through the interplay of idiosyncratic shapes and surfaces. He has participated in various group shows in Chicago and Richmond, and two of his paintings were chosen as cover art for books by Alexander Lowell.

Steven Warrick

Steven Warrick is a Richmond Designer, Illustrator, Sculptor, and Painter. He obtained a BFA in Communication Arts and Design from Virginia Commonwealth University. His paintings are visual constructions of his interpretations of writing music. His use of color, texture, and patterns are the visual equivalent to writing a song; Their melodies, harmonies, rhythms, and structures are interpreted within the interactions of color, tone, and texture in a kind of synesthesia-based construction.
