Artist's Statement
About two years ago, near Lake Ontario, I saw a tree scarred by the elements. The photograph I took of that tree has proven to be the seed of an ongoing group of pictures.

Trees may be the glue that holds this body of work together, but they are not what my pictures are about. They are, rather, about finds -- trees, plants, vegetation off kilter, in awkward alliance, startling in their imperfections, unexpected in their growth. It is the strangeness of the situation my trees find themselves in, though they may have been intentionally planted in the places where I find them, that attracts me.

Beyond my interest in trees, my pictures are about connections in which picture elements are echoed by other elements in the same picture. I also find that when I look at my prints, they almost dissolve into abstraction. Yet that experience doesn't last long, as the prints seem to maintain a clarity that doesn't break down even on the closest inspection.
