Halide Salam explains of her Voices: "In these works, I explore land and cultural environment in which, objects, symbols, and identities morph in space, fragmenting and reconstructing to ask questions of what we think we know, and withhold questions and definitions regarding what is or could be. Flag_ellation and Proclamation are a more direct confrontation with the world of media, bias, symbols and identities. By reconstructing, blending, transforming and remaking opinionated imagery in order to explore and question related meaning, I hope to stir and awaken the contemporary heart. In Silent Voices, there is a quietness that exudes when confrontation ends. The space is pregnant with unanswered voices. Here my search is to create a field of forms that can resonate on a universal level."
Halide Salam has exhibited her paintings and works on paper in national and international galleries and museums and has won numerous awards in painting. She has presented lectures and papers on art and art history throughout her teaching career within and outside the United States. Her book, Between Two Spaces: Reflections on the Spiritual in Art, was published in 2008 and was nominated for the 2008 National Book Award in Non-Fiction.
