"Bon Voyeur," Paintings by Michael O’Neal in the Helena Davis Gallery, are partly the result of a chance collaboration with photographer Aimee Fitzgerald from Canberra Australia. Michael explains: "She came across my earlier work in 2010 via the internet and offered to model for me based on thumbnail sketches that were sent to her through emails. The work is based on inter relationships between objective and non-objective imagery. Retroactively, in its objective state, I think that the work deals with narratives involving the male 'gaze,' isolation, tension, and a search for beauty that can be attained through the embrace of suffering and loneliness." Nude female figures have been incorporated into layered swaths of subtly colored patterns and references. O’Neal received his MIS degree from VCU in 2010. He also has a BFA in Painting and Printmaking, 1991 and a BFA in Art Education, 1993 from VCU. Michael currently teaches at Hermitage High School and has taught at Brookland Middle School.
