Main Gallery
This exhibition investigates using gypsum wallboard as a vehicle to create dynamic volumes that define a new architectural topography. The architectural language presented in this work directly contradicts the classic perception of walls forming architecture; angular versus orthographic, tilting versus vertical, and suspension versus compression. The interplay of sharp angles, in contrast with the strictness of existing vertical walls, gives a new sense of energy and excitement to the space. To blur the contrast of art verses architecture, the minimal flat panels are painted to match the gallery walls. In order to return the viewer to a personal interaction level, the exposed thin edges are left unfinished showing the tactility of the gypsum core. These linear edges define spatial gestures that give volume and direction to each piece. The pieces chosen for each location of the gallery reinforce a sense of community through a common language and tone. Eliciting spatial awareness, attention, curiosity, imperfection, detail, and contemplation are the goals to be achieved with the viewer as they experience the installation.
