Artist Statement

The drawings featured in "Origins" are spontaneously brought into existence: I first clear my mind and allow the creative urge to enter my brain sending an impulse though my arm into my hand - pen held relaxed and ready - and finally releasing it onto paper. I allow each image to express itself and then as it emerges, I actively recognize areas within the piece which I then fill with a variety of repeating patterns. Foreground and background become distinct, but sometimes illogical. The images that emerge are universal, supplying a pattern that is recognized by everyone and yet each viewer sees a pattern that is specific to them.

The idea for the "Elaborate Doodle" paintings I have featured in "Altered Perceptions" originated with these drawings. I began doing drawings of this nature in the late 1980's, with several of them being published in various editions of the Richmond art and poetry magazine, "Caution." In 2006, I felt compelled to create more of them. Upon completion of a few dozen, I wondered what they would look like as paintings, and recreated them with conte crayon and oil on canvas. Eventually, I decided that they should be created by drawing with sharpie directly onto the canvas, then layering with acrylic and more sharpie. I have since begun incorporating soft pastel into the paintings as well and have focused on featuring the sharpie to a greater extent in the finished works. Eventually, I hope to bring these forms and patterns into the 3rd dimension with sculptures.
