Artist's Statement
From the Smoky Mountains captures the overlap of natural and man-made details in the foothills of our nation's most visited national park. Abandoned dwellings being slowly reclaimed by the elements-a fire hydrant in some bushes by a trailhead-a hill, clear cut to make room for weekly rental cabins-these are all to be found within a few miles of each other. These elements of decay and rebirth all testify to the ornery persistence of the natural world. With these images I hope to reveal the quiet, solemn, and sometimes disturbing beauty that resides, often unnoticed, in the shadow of the mountains.
I use a large format camera that produces 4"x5" negatives, which I develop and contact print in my darkroom. Contact printing is a process in which the film is compressed against the photographic printing paper and exposed to light, producing an image the same size as the negative. I then extensively work over these prints by hand, using a silver-reducing "bleach", selenium toner, and watercolor to make fine adjustments to each print. Contact prints produced this way possess a tonal intensity and a razor-sharp rendition of detail that is not found either in enlargements from film or in digital prints. The vividness of a contact print is hard to describe exactly, but unmistakable once noted.
