Artist's Statement
Our perceptions are greatly influenced by the perspective in which we view our surroundings or situations. In life, variables such as one's upbringing, social-economic status, gender, and religion, all affect the way in which we view the world around us and our opinions of it.
While we tend to think that we know the world and accept it as what we understand about it, sometimes our greatest insights occur when we can look behind the screen or change our angle of perspective in order to see a subject from another point of view.
I've tried to incorporate this idea into the creation of my artwork. By turning the paintings as I create them, areas that have been previously undeveloped become more prominent in my vision allowing me to then continue with the development of the whole.
When a piece is finished I typically display it in the direction or the orientation that gives me the clearest idea for a title. But there is so much more to the paintings in their different orientations or perspectives that aren’t seen typically. Because of this, I've decided to turn my pieces 90 degrees every few days so that the public can see what else is going on with them that wouldn't normally be on view.
I consider these pieces to be non-representational un-abstractions. The work is not abstract because I am not attempting to deconstruct a thought or an object into an alternate version. Nor is it representational because I am not attempting to display something that is already in my mind or in reality. Yet in their finished states, images and ideas come across through the correlations of the patterns and the colors and the lines with each viewer bringing their own lives and experiences with them in their individual understanding of the work.
