I have been making images that explore identity, change and adaptation. Some are as ethereal as mirages and some earthy and geological.
My paintings are forms of fluidity; gravitational migrations of color diffuse, puddle and drip in thin, layered washes. Color nuances fluctuate as light shifts through their translucent paper support. Depictions referencing the spirals of a fingerprint evidence a shadowy presence.
In the first sculptural pieces, I began to experiment with cutting and reforming pieces of painted and unpainted yupo paper. Some of the cut fingerprint patterns spring into space, appendages awry; other forms appear more fragile and passive hovering near collapse. Gravity affirms its influence, speeding up a process congruent to decline and decay.
I have recently incorporated a 4-step process of painting, cutting, burning, and bundling pieces of yupo paper. The resulting relief sculptures resemble some ancient or futuristic variety of flowering plant. They are at once soft and brittle, their colors struggling to maintain an original richness strangely enhanced by having survived a flame. Adapting to an unpredictable process, their shape and contour exude elegance; their smoky edges and tones embrace experience.
