Italy: Shadows and Reflections
Photography
Green Shutters
August 22 through September 21
Helena Davis Gallery
Casting Shadows and Reflections is a collection of images that appeals to my appreciation of intriguing distortion and abstract design. I look for the curious benefits of shadows on a subject and the abstract qualities of reflections.
Originally a photographer of black and white photographs, my eye still seeks the dramatic compliment between light and shadow on a subject.
Visitors to Venice will recognize reflections of buildings that while attractive in their upright position provide a skewed fluid pattern when reflected upside down in water. Using the camera to capture the odd, the skewed and the unrealistic images is an approach that provides surprises with no guarantee. I like the uncertainty.
Several photographs were taken while riding a Vaporetto around Venice at night. The motion of the boat, the shimmer of the water, and buildings with minimal light contributed to another possibility for the uncertain.
I wish to thank Martin McFadden for curating my work for this show.
