GO FISH!

Artspace is proud to sponsor a fish as part of the
Richmond GO FISH! project.

"1708 Gallery, in cooperation with the City of Richmond, announced an exciting opportunity for artists to be a part of the "Go Fish" project, the city's largest temporary public art project. Modeled after Chicago's successful "Cows on Parade", Richmond's icon will be the rockfish, to recognize its resurgence in our James River."

    ARTWORK IN PROGRESS ...

Artspace's Fish rests in a corner of the Mezzanine. Erin Fortenberry of the Artspace Outreach Committee co-ordinated the painting of the fish.

One of the first additions is a lizard provided by Henrietta Near. Mitzi Humphrey added an undulating teal blue band.
Dana Frostick adds her touch to the jaw of the FISH.

Some colorful addtions to the fins appear.
Detail of the jaw in its finished state.
    Another view from the front.

Work progresses around to the back of the fish.

Santa DeHaven's collage flows down the back of the fish, but there's still a lot of space left to fill in.

The front side boasts a new addition by Keith Ramsey from fin to tail and around to the other side.

Henrietta Near puts a clear coat over her collage work around the face and mouth.

A closer vew of Santa DeHaven's collage work. Dana Frostick begins the top fin and a section on the side including the front right fin.

Matt Lively adds scales along the top and John Bailey fills in around Dana Frostick's mountain scene with figures.

A stream flows across the tail of the fish. John Bailey's figure work becomes part of the landscape. Frances Wessells adds her touch on the back fin.

A view of the side of the fish featuring the work on Santa DeHaven, John Bailey and Dana Frostick.

Matt Lively's work caps Santa DeHaven's collage. John Bailey's figures rest alongside the collage work by Henrietta Near on the face of the fish.

John Bailey adds details to his figures.

Marian Hollowell fills the last open space with a bright flower on a red background.

The beginning of the overlay can be seen on the face of the fish. John Bailey is using a metallic colored paint with a stencil to "encode" the fish with binary data.

The underpainting is completely finished and the overlay has begun.

After completing the overlay, the fish was covered with a protecting sealant and delivered to fish co-ordinators who provided the base and moved it to it's outdoor location at 12th and Main.

www.artspacegallery.org seems to enjoy its location near the fountain in the Bank of America Plaza.
