THE FLOODWALL - A MINIMALISTIC APPROACH
I enjoy the exploration of the
medium of color photography. I am attracted to straight color and have
not chosen to alter the color pallet. Many photographers choose to
abandon straight photography or color for the manipulated. I take
pleasure in creating harmony of line and form. The mammoth size of the
floodwall creates dramatic light and shadows.
With my goal being to achieve
brilliant color, these photographs have been taken in the fall, winter
or spring, when atmospheric haze is at a minimum. The light at these
times of year is rich and brilliant and the color is extremely
saturated. I have found the best days to work on this project have been
after a rain when a new high-pressure front pushes out the atmospheric
haze and humidity.
I have a passion for printing
my own photographs, which is unusual in today's world where many
photographers choose to have their work printed at an outside lab.
Printing affords me the opportunity to be involved in the
decision-making process from inception to completion of any given
project. Photographing various directions and at various times of day
has created a tremendous challenge in balancing the color of the wall
from picture to picture.
The floodwall and its dynamic
presence have been challenging to work with visually. I am attracted to
the minimalist form that it presents in its mammoth proportion. My
photographs depict how the wall interfaces and visually impacts the
city.
